Study Participation

Our research would not be possible without the eager participation of research subjects.  The COERD would like to thank all past participants and everyone who has shown interest in our studies.

Please see below for information on participating in our current studies.  All studies have been been obtained UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board Approval and can be searched through their indicated project ID.

Please note that volunteers will be compensated for their time.

1)      To Study Health Effects of Air Pollution and Allergens
(Human Ethics Protocol Approval Project ID: H11-01831 V1 10.11.11)

Requirements:

  • 19-49 years of age
  • Allergic to birch, grass and/or dust mite (it is ok if you do not know, we will test you!)
  • Healthy or with mild asthma
  • Non-smoking
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not using inhaled corticosteroids

If you meet the above study requirements, you will be asked to visit our lab at Vancouver General Hospital seven times for a total time commitment of about 55-60 hours.  The entire study will take at least 13 weeks.

Testing procedures include:

  • Four 2-hour exposure to diesel exhaust and to filtered air in a specially ventilated room.  The pollution will be no more than those similar to levels experienced in Mexico City or Beijing on a smoggy day.
  • Bronchoscopy 48 hours after each exposure.  Bronchoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube is passed down your throat and into your lungs.
  • Collection of blood, urine & nasal/bronchial lavage samples.
  • Standard lung function testing.
  • Health & symptom questionnaires.
  • Retinal imaging.

2)      To Study Health Effects of Trafic Related Air Pollution in Those at Risk for COPD
(Human Ethics Protocol Approval Project ID: H11-00821 V1 10.11.11)

Requirements:

  • 40-70 years of age
  • Free of cardiovascular disease
  • Free of insulin-dependent diabetes
  • Be one of the following:
    • A person with mild COPD (“GOLD 1”)
    • A never smoker without COPD
    • An ex-smoker without COPD

If you meet the above study requirements, you will be asked to visit our lab at Vancouver General Hospital five times for a total time commitment of about 30 hours.  The entire study will take at least 5 weeks.

Testing procedures include:

  • Two 2-hour exposure to diesel exhaust and to filtered air in a specially ventilated room.  The pollution will be similar to levels experienced in Mexico City or major Asian cities.
  • Bronchoscopy 24 hours after each exposure.  Bronchoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube is passed down your throat and into your lungs.
  • Collection of blood & bronchial lavage samples.
  • Standard lung function testing.
  • Health & symptom questionnaires.
  • Completing exercise tests; 1 incremental, 2 steady state.

3)      To Study the Combined Effects of Air Pollution and Exercise on Lung Health
(Human Ethics Protocol Approval Project ID: H13-01079-A004)

Requirements:

  •  Males or Females
  • 19-40 years of age
  • Controlled asthma
  • Non-smoking
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max): Males > 50ml . Ÿkg-1Ÿ . min-1; Females > 40mlŸ . kg-1Ÿ . min1
(Will be tested during screening process)

If you meet the study requirements, you will be asked to visit our lab at Vancouver General Hospital five times for a total time commitment of about 22.5 hours.  The entire study will take at least 4 weeks.

Testing procedures include:

  • Two 2-hour exposures to diesel exhaust and another two 2-hour exposures to filtered air in a specially ventilated room.  The pollution will be similar to levels experienced in Mexico City or Beijing on a smoggy day.
  • Standard lung function testing
  • Collection of blood (16ml, 4 x per day for days 2-5)
  • Performing computer-based test to assess cognitive/brain function

4) To study the effects of phthalates and allergens

(Human Ethics Protocol Approval Project ID: H14-01119 V2.30/09/2015)

Requirements:

  • 19-49 years of age
  • Allergic to birch, grass, and/ or dust mite (if you do not know, we will test you!)
  • Healthy or with mild asthma
  • Non-smoking
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not using inhaled corticosteroids

If you meet the study requirements, you will be asked to visit our lab at Vancouver General Hospital six times for a total time commitment of about 24 to 32 hours. The entire study will take at least 4 weeks.

Testing procedures include:

  • 3-hour exposure to phthalate* and to filtered air while sitting in a room
  • Allergen inhalation after the exposure
  • Collection of blood, urine & nasal samples. Bronchial samples optional
  • Standard lung function testing
  • Health & symptom questionnaires
  • Optional bronchoscopy 24h after each exposure. Bronchoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube is passed down your throat and into your lungs (Not mandatory)

*Phthalate is a substance that we are frequently exposed through the use of various consumer products, such as cosmetics, food containers, raincoats, and shampoos. The level of phthalate exposure is around 50 times lower than the occupational hygiene standard allowed over a period of 8 hours.
